Lent 2010 (17th February - 3rd April)
What is Lent? It is the time of year when Christians get 'back to basics', as we prepare to celebrate the central events of Jesus's Death and Resurrection at
Holy Week and Easter. Lent is a time to re-discover the importance of prayer
and worship, of self-denial, and of generous giving to those in need. It is also a
time for Christians to seek to learn afresh the fundamental Truths of Christianity.
This page will be updated weekly during Lent with details of all Mass times, and other services and events, at Saint James's Church.
In our opening paragraph we mentioned the importance of self-denial and
generous giving to those in need. At Saint James's, we support four charities during Lent. We do this by making cash donations to each of these four charities.
These donations are raised from collections in church, and through our 'Lent Box' scheme. People are encouraged to take a box at the beginning of Lent and to
fill it with monetary gifts, the thinking being that the money they save from their
self-denial should be put into their Lent Box so that it can help those in need. At
the end of Lent, all boxes are brought back and Saint James's gives the money
raised to our nominated charities through our 'Donations to Charity' programme.
